Germany Military Upgrade 2022

• Germany will allocate €100b for military upgrades (40b air force, 20b navy, 17b infantry, rest for restocking ammo, and other upgrades).
• Will also try to increase military spending to NATO-mandated 2% of GDP.
• There's some pacifist opposition, so it's not guaranteed.
• Procurement is inefficient because, among other things, contractors can sue if they lose a bid.

My thoughts

Maintaining a well functioning army is important for preventing wars. However, justifying high spending in the absence of wars is difficult. Another problem is that even with high spending the army can get inefficient and ineffective. An active war provides the right pressures to improve the army, but the cost of the active war is high.

Could we develop a better training regime? It will be costly, but if the alternative is war, perhaps it's worth it.
